Chapter 9
StellaLuna was once again on her adventure, walking through the forest looking for some new tree friends. As she walked along a path that followed a ravine that was created by an old dry creek, she heard a very loud conversation, and it sounded like a conversation someone was having with themselves.
As the creek, the ravine, and the path all rounded a corner, she spied a face in what once was the very top of a tree, but now was lying down on the ground on an embankment, that was next to the path, with the ravine on the opposite side of the path. Being taught that you should always look at someone when you talk to them, StellaLuna put her front paws on the embankment so she could see the tree's face better. The face had grown out of the tree, where it broke from the rest of the tree and seemed to be looking across the path towards the ravine behind her. She didn’t see where the rest of the tree was.
“Hello,” said StellaLuna. “My name is StellaLuna. Why are you lying on the ground?”
“Oh … Hello,” said the tree top. “My name is Humpty. I’m lying on the ground because I fell over in a snowstorm last winter while catching snowflakes. Like most trees, I love snowflakes, and I love to catch them. But, you should be very careful how far you reach to try and get one. But, this one was so different from all the rest. I just had to have it.”
Suddenly, StellaLuna heard a voice that sounded just like Humpty’s voice, but it was coming from the bottom of the ravine behind her. “They’re all different … Every snowflake is different!.”
“Who said that?” said StellaLuna.
“The rest of me,” said Humpty. “I used to sit on that wall of earth on the other side of the ravine. I reached out across the ravine for that one-of-a-kind beauty of a snowflake, and then in a flash, there was a loud crash, and now I’m only half the tree I used to be.”
“You’re not even a third of the tree we used to be,” StellaLuna heard from the ravine below. “I’m the biggest piece … and I’m barely half the tree we used to be. You made quite the mess of us, our trunk over there, and giant limbs, branches, and leaves everywhere.”
“You wouldn’t happen to know any king’s horses or king’s men?” Humpty’s top said to StellaLuna.
“No … why?” said StellaLuna.
"You know the nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty,” said Humpty’s top.
“The one about the egg sitting on a wall?” said StellaLuna.
“Everyone just assumes that Humpty is an egg, well ...I'm a tree ...and I've been waiting for all the king's horses and all the king's men for quite a while now,” said Humpty’s top.
“Doesn’t matter, they probably wouldn’t be too helpful anyways,” StellaLuna heard from the ravine. “They couldn't fix Humpty in the rhyme. Maybe she could just toss you down here so at least we could be closer … and not have to yell up and down a ravine at each other.”
“I don’t think even my human could do that,” said StellaLuna. “He looks very big and heavy”.
“Where is your human?” said Humpty’s top. "Dogs usually have a human attached to them."
“I entered the forest by myself, knowing he would follow, but I've been having so much fun," said StellaLuna. "I guess I forgot about time. I'm sure he has entered the forest by now, is looking for me, and will pop up any minute. How big can the forest be?"
“From what I hear, there are forests all over the world, and the world is a very big place,” said Humpty’s top." Therefore, the forest is a big place too. Does he know where you are?"
Suddenly, StellaLuna realized that she didn’t even know where she was. With all the adventuring happening, she didn’t pay attention to which path she took when the paths crossed. “Oh no” barked StellaLuna. I need to try and get back to where I was. It was very nice to meet you Humpty, I hope the king's horses and men arrive soon,” she said as she started to go back the way she came.
“If you see the King, please let him know I’m waiting,” said Humpty
